Batty Bwoy – Harald Beharie

Batty Bwoy explores the absurdity of queer monstrosity and the fluidity of bodies and languages. The performance centers around the Jamaican term ‘Batty Bwoy’ (a queer person), using it to rewrite myths and reveal demonic sensitivities, charming cruelties, and vulnerable possibilities. The work uncovers the horror and joy of queer blackness.

The term ‘Batty Bwoy’ evokes an ambivalent being that straddles the line between the perverse and the liberating, between fear and joy. Batty Bwoy challenges narratives about the queer body as deviant and perverse.

Harald Beharie (he/they) is a Norwegian-Jamaican performer and choreographer from Oslo. His work explores themes of construction and deconstruction, hope and uncertainty, with a focus on the vulnerability of the unknown. Beharie celebrates a wide spectrum of embodiment, from the pathetic to the ecstatic, and embraces queer playfulness.

Haralds work has been nominated for awards, and Batty Bwoy won the Hedda Award for ‘Best Dance Production’ in 2023.

Batty Bwoy onderzoekt de absurditeit van queer monsterlijkheid en de vloeibaarheid van lichamen en talen. De voorstelling draait om de Jamaicaanse term ‘Batty Bwoy’ (een queer persoon) en gebruikt deze om mythes te herschrijven, waardoor demonische gevoeligheden, charmante wreedheden en kwetsbare mogelijkheden onthuld worden. Het werk ontmaskert de horror en vreugde van queer blackness.

De term ‘Batty Bwoy’ roept een ambivalent wezen op dat balanceert tussen het perverse en bevrijdende, tussen angst en vreugde. Batty Bwoy bestrijdt de verhalen over het queer lichaam als afwijkend en pervert.

Harald Beharie (hij/die) is een Noors-Jamaicaanse performer en choreograaf uit Oslo. Zijn werk verkent thema’s van constructie en deconstructie, hoop en onzekerheid, met een focus op de kwetsbaarheid van het onbekende. Beharie viert een breed spectrum van belichaming, van het pathetische tot het extatische, en omarmt queer speelsheid.

Harald’s werk is genomineerd voor prijzen, en Batty Bwoy won in 2023 de Hedda-prijs voor ‘beste dansproductie’.
